The next morning the sky was still overcast, but the temperature was a little warmer. Cyrus woke feeling breathless from a nightmare he couldn't remember. Something about bony fingers crawling all over him. He was too tired to go out for his run so he placed an order for fruit and juice from room service and served Kyna breakfast in bed. Later, after he had checked out of the motel, Kyna said she wanted to stop at the bakery they had passed the night before near Cannery Row and pick up some fresh bagels. On his way back to the car with the bagels, he spotted a BICYCLES FOR RENT sign in the window of a sporting goods store. As he peered through the window at the rows of gleaming 10-speeds and mountain bikes, his rear end suddenly felt the weight of all the long hours sitting in the car. |

"Let's rent a couple of bikes and go for a ride," he said to Kyna when he returned to the car. |

"We shouldn't," she said with a sigh. "I have a delivery" |

"And if I remember correctly it isn't scheduled until mañana. Come on. Don't tell me you never played hooky before?" |

"Do you think it's . . . safe?" |

Cyrus held his arms out at his sides. "It's a nice day. I'm a nice guy. What could happen?" |
